Buswell Takes 2010 Winter Series

September 26 - Following on from an exciting day's racing at Ellenbrook Speedway on Sunday, Dylan Buswell has taken out the 2010 Wingless Sprints W.A Winter Series. Things didn't all go Buswell's way in the series' finale, with a non finish in the feature race leaving him 6th on points for Round 4. Fortunately for the Buswell camp, his main rival, Liam Dowling, also failed to finish the feature and only made up 1 point of the 39 required to get back on level terms.

Sunday's racing saw a maiden feature win for Scott Elst in the Gary Walsh owned #23, having come from the second row after a consistent run through the heats. With both front row starters in Dowling and Buswell failing to go the journey, there was no shortage of drivers waiting to pounce. Kyle Beard was also looking to make the most of a second row start, and Taylor Milling was another of the Generation Next to be very much in the top half of the field. Ultimately the feature race saw Elst take the win, followed by Beard, Jono Coyle and Milling.

Earlier in the day, Dowling and Buswell had made their intentions clear right from the outset. With the points margin that existed at the start of the day, both drivers were only too aware that if Dowling could beat Buswell head to head in each of the day's races it would be more than enough to overturn the deficit. Buswell did the one thing that wouldn't get Dowling any closer to the series win, taking ou the first heat and extending the gap even further. With 51 points now separating the pair, Dowling did take the win in the second heat of the day, with Buswell back in 4th. This bough the series margin back to 23 points, with the third heat and the feature still ot race. With a 32 point gap between 1st and 2nd in the feature, it was truly back to being 'game on'. Buswell however took out the 3rd heat of the day, with Dowling 'only' managing a 3rd place result, pushing the margin back out to 44.

Having dominated the heats, the paid lined up side by side for the feature, the equation pretty simple, particularly for Buswell. Beat Dowling head to head and the series was over. For Dowling, the 44 point gap meant winning the race and hoping Buswell finished 3rd or lower. Of course speedway is never as simple as all that, and both drivers retired from the event, their classification seeing Dowling make up 6 points, leaving Buswell to take the series by 38.

Credit must go to Elst who in only his 3rd Wingless Sprints W.A event took a fine feature win and will no doubt be looking forward to a successful summer with this experience under his belt. Likewise Beard would be happy with his second place feature finish wrapping up 3rd in the series, ahead of the impressive Taylor Milling whose 4th confirmed him in the same position for the series.

Elst's win pushed him up to 6th for the series, ahead of Carol O'Sullivan. Carl Pickersgill ended the series in 8th after getting off to a flyer with a win in Round 1, while Cory Gilpin and Jono Coyle rounded out the Top 10.

Thanks must go to Rogue Race Products for their support of the series. Prize money payouts for the series Top 10 and Rogue Race Products Classic Top 3 will be made at the end of season Wingless Sprints W.A award night, with the series winner pocketing a cool $500. It was a productive winter for Buswell, with the Rogue Race Products Classic also attracting $500 for the win.

So, that's the official proceedings done for the winter part of the calendar, the next meeting for Wingless Sprints W.A is a return to the Perth Motorplex for the first Fast Friday of the summer, on October 15.
